Fera returned with the biggest grin on her face.

She was wearing brown trousers and a loose shirt, tucked in and cinched in place by a cloth belt.

The outfit was simple, but seeing her figure for the first time since she’d been buried in my spare robe took me aback.

Fera’s flaring hips and generous bust had nowhere to hide now.

I blinked, trying to compose myself. “You look great,” I said plainly.

Mark chuckled, and I shot him a withering look.

Instead of teasing me, he asked the inevitable. “Come on, I know you’ve both got coin. How about a few more purchases?”

I rubbed my hands together, and Fera and I ran through the list of options.

In the end, we decided on a ton of apples, ten loaves of bread, and two more large waterskins.

I broke down and bought a set of traveler’s clothes myself, not wanting to be stuck in robes all the time, and added one more pair of socks and small clothes to my collection.

Owning more than Fera might look selfish, but I was a man. My own stink would far surpass hers before too long.

When I thought we’d finished, Fera asked, “Hey, don’t you think we deserve a treat? Why not pick up some wine and brandy?”

I considered the idea.

So far, we hadn’t had any opportunities to rest, let alone let our guard down.

The purchases seemed wasteful.

If there was one thing I’d learned over the years, though, it was that if a woman wants to drink with you, the only answer is yes.

“We’ll take one of each,” I told Mark.

He waved his hand, and I dismissed the trade menu.

Mark’s face suddenly grew stern. I almost thought he was angry for a bit.

In a strained voice, the goblin said, “You know, Jory, I wish there was more I could do to help you. I’d join your party and track down Topher… You know that, right?”

“Of course, Mark,” I replied. “No need to feel bad, man. You can’t exactly help it.”

“Precisely. I’m an NPC, or at least a user that has been partially merged with one. So I can’t help you in any way.”

I glanced to Fera, still quite confused.

Fera gave him a generous smile. “We understand, Mark. I’m sure we’ll be fine on our own.”

“Oh, I don’t doubt it,” Mark said. “I can’t help you at all. I’m just here to grant you quests and sell you stuff. You made some solid purchases today.

“I’m glad I could do that much at least… but I do think you’d both look good with some accessories.”

I scratched my chin, starting to get the hint being passed under the metaphorical table. “Really? You don’t think I would look silly if I bought an especially fine hat?”

Mark’s eyes lit up, and he stood triumphant.

Catching himself, he sobered his expression and sat back down. “I don’t think you’d look silly at all. Hats are wonderful things. So are scarves.”

Glancing at our funds, I saw we had enough to buy both items.

“You know what, Mark the Goblin Merchant? I find I would love nothing more than to buy a hat.
